What an inspection drone actually needs

Towers, turbines, bridges, and pipelines share one requirement: get the right sensor to the fault, hold it steady, and come home. Four things decide the machine:

The sensor that sees the fault

Zoom optics read surface damage from a safe standoff; thermal imaging finds electrical and moisture faults that look fine visually. The sensor is the payload the airframe is designed around.

Wind margins at working altitude

Inspection sites are windy by nature, and hub-height wind is stronger than ground wind. DRONA validates thrust-to-weight and control margins so the aircraft holds position where the work is.

Standoff, not contact

A stable GPS hover plus a zoom payload means the aircraft never needs to be close enough to touch what it inspects. Camera fly-to framing is designed in, not improvised.

A crew-packable platform

Common questions

Thermal or zoom for inspection?

Different faults: zoom sees cracks, erosion, and corrosion; thermal sees hot connections, moisture, and delamination. Many programs carry both across two flights, and DRONA sizes the lift budget for the payload set you name.

How close does the drone get to the structure?

With a zoom payload, inspection is a standoff exercise: the aircraft holds a safe distance and the optics close the gap. No-contact is the default posture.

Can one design cover turbines, towers, and pipelines?
